A programming language and runtime environment built at Ericsson and released as open source software. We use Erlang as the main ingredient to build large scale, highly available, reliable, distributed systems. If applied in the proper problem domain it may outperform traditional technologies such as Java and .Net in terms of development costs and time to market. Therefore, it's also well suited for developing prototypes.
